JAISALMER: A 30-year-old Dalit woman died during treatment in a Jodhpur hospital late Friday evening, a day after she was raped and burnt with acid, allegedly by a 28-year-old man from the same village in Barmer district.
On finding the married woman home alone on Thursday night, the accused, Shakur Khan, entered the house and raped her, Barmer SP Digant Anand said.
In their complaint, her family alleged that Khan had brought a corrosive, acid-like substance that he poured on the victim. He was arrested on Friday.
BJP calls for Balotra Bandh todayAfter her death, the woman's relatives sat on a dharna outside mortuary of Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, Jodhpur, demanding financial compensation of Rs 1 crore, a government job, and strict action against accused. With the family refusing to end their agitation and allow the post-mortem until their demands were accepted, the body was still at the mortuary at the time of going to press.
Pachpadra MLA Madan Prajapat and Union junior minister Kailash Chaudhary consoled the bereaved kin. The matter triggered widespread outrage, with many politicians criticising the law-and-order situation under the Congress government. In Barmer's Balotra, BJP submitted a memorandum for an investigation besides calling for a "Balotra Bandh" on Sunday.
