Rajasthan court sentences 5 to life imprisonment in decade-long land dispute case

JAISALMER: The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Dr Mahendra Kumar Goyal in Pokaran on Wednesday sentenced five convicts to life imprisonment in a 10-year-old case from Delasar village under Lathi police station.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1,11,500 on each of the convicts. The case was related to a land dispute that led to a violent assault and an attempt to murder.

Public Prosecutor Samundar Singh stated that the incident took place on July 20, 2016, at around 6 pm. The complainant, Bhanwar Singh, son of Bhim Singh and a resident of Delasar, lodged a report at Lathi police station on July 21, 2016.

According to the report, his father Bhim Singh was returning to the village from his field on a tractor. On the way, due to a land dispute, the accused — Bhom Singh, Banka Singh, Sang Singh, Manohar Singh and Loon Singh — allegedly stopped the tractor and attacked him.

They climbed onto the tractor and assaulted him with sticks, an axe and iron rods, targeting his head. Bhim Singh narrowly escaped with his life after people intervened and rescued him. He sustained serious injuries to his head and body and was later referred to Jodhpur for treatment.

The prosecutor added that Lathi police registered the case, arrested the accused, and produced them before the court. After the charge sheet was filed, the prosecution examined witnesses and documents. Following arguments from both sides, the court found the accused guilty and sentenced them to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 1,11,500 each.

The prosecution was represented by Additional Public Prosecutor Samundar Singh Rathore. Proceedings against accused Kanwaraj Singh were closed due to his death.
