Rajasthan cabinet clears 33% quota for women in police department

JAIPUR: Rajasthan's BJP cabinet cleared Wednesday a 33% quota for females in police services, pitching the first such allocation in the state as the fulfilment of a manifesto pledge made last year to ensure women's safety. Rajasthan Police Subordinate Service Rules, 1989, will be amended for the women's quota, officials said. CM Bhajanlal Sharma's cabinet also approved 2% reservations for "outstanding" sportspersons in jobs of excise (liquor) labs and libraries, and 5% additional allowance for pensioners.

Deputy CM Prem Chand Bairwa said, "In our election manifesto of 2023, we had committed to prioritising women's safety by ensuring a minimum of 33% recruitment in police. This decision aligns with our promise." He added that the quota would be notified soon and implemented from the next police recruitment exams.

Bairwa said the initiative would not only provide more employment opportunities for women but also enhance their trust in policing, and enable departments to address women's issues with greater sensitivity.

For pensioners, 5% additional allowance has been cleared for those from "70 to 75", but Bairwa said the upper age limit will be revised to "70 and above". It aims to offer more security to the elderly, especially for care-related expenses. tnn
