Rajasthan bans 17 packaged foods after tests find them unsafe

JAIPUR: Rajasthan’s health department has banned the sale, distribution and display of 17 packaged food products for two months after April 2026 samples from districts were found unsafe for human consumption, officials said.

The banned items include 11 ghee products and one sample each of turmeric, roasted chana, kesar bati, tea, sugar-boiled confectionery and namkeen. Officials warned the products may pose serious health risks.

Principal Secretary Health Gayatri Rathore said orders have been issued to enforce the statewide ban after inspection reports declared the items unsafe. The Food Safety Commissionerate has directed vendors not to stock, display or sell the listed products during the ban period.

Of the 11 unsafe ghee samples, seven were manufactured in Haryana, two in Pali, and one each in Punjab and Jodhpur. Several of the unsafe products are linked to brands from outside Rajasthan.

Food Safety Commissioner Dr T Shubhmangala said traders can seek re-examination within the period allowed under Section 46(4) of the Food Safety and Standards Act. If the referral laboratory also finds the samples unsafe, or if no appeal is filed within the prescribed period, the recall process will begin. Until then, the public has been advised not to buy or consume any of the listed products.

Additional Commissioner Food Safety Bhagwat Singh said 11 of the 17 banned products were manufactured by companies based outside Rajasthan, including Haryana, Punjab, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh. He said letters have been sent to the food safety departments of the concerned states, seeking action against the manufacturers under the law.
