Rafeeq has by now recovered from the fracture in his nose. Azmat suffered injury in the spine in the attack. He is now much better but doctors have warned him not to lift anything heavy – for a man whose work involves hard labour, this is difficult.

On Tuesday, the two young men were at the five-day dharna in the state capital to express solidarity with the family of Zafar Khan of Pratapgarh.

Ironically, Zafar Khan was himself in Jaipur on April 21, attending a meeting of the CPI-ML to plan how to ensure justice for Pehlu Khan of Nuh, Haryana, who had died after the April 1 attack in Alwar.

On Tuesday the two youth accepted with gratitude two cheques of Rs40,000 each. Kavita Srivastava of the

Suchna Evum Rozgar Abhiyan

said, “This is a small sum that has been collected from generous donors, all of whom were extremely pained by the attack of April 1.”

On Tuesday, Mahendra Choudhury of the CPI-ML said kin of Zafar Khan in Pratapgarh returned the Rs2 lakh cheque that the state government had earlier handed over to the family as compensation. “The family has been fighting with courage. What they want now is justice, not compensation,” he said.
