Polytrauma unit of SMS helps to lower deaths

Jaipur: The trauma department of Sawai Man Singh Hospital has been showing better results with the introduction of the ‘polytrauma department’. This section was introduced in May earlier this year and since then, the number of patients being dealt with have improved. There has been a reduction of 70 per cent in fatalities owing to trauma accidents.Usually in case of trauma accident cases, the patient is first taken to polytrauma. At SMS, this dedicated care comprises 50 beds and everyday sees around 40-50 beds being admitted. In the last three months only, the specialised unit has been able to reduce mortality by 60-70%. Not just that the unit was able to cut down those patients who would get themselves discharged without completing the course of treatment by 50 percent. While earlier the patients admitted at polytrauma would get referred to other departments for further treatment in two and half days, now it is done within one and half days. “The golden hour time period plays a crucial role in saving the life of the patient. This is a complete team effort and a combined input from various departments owing to which we have been able to achieve such remarkable change within a short time span,” said Dr Dinesh Gora, assistant professor, department of trauma surgery, SMS Hospital.

New drug offers relief for treatment-resistant epilepsy patients

A new study has found that an investigational drug called XEN1101 can significantly reduce seizure frequency, and sometimes eliminate seizures entirely, in certain individuals with epilepsy. Unlike other treatments, XEN1101 can be taken at its most effective level right away. The drug was well tolerated by participants in the trial, with side effects similar to other antiseizure medications. The study also revealed no signs of dangerous side effects. Researchers plan to further test the drug in more patients and explore its effectiveness for other types of seizures.
