Jaipur: With a significant increase in cases of conjunctivitis in the state, ophthalmologists are cautioning patients against resorting to over-the-counter (OTC) drugs for treatment. Experts are emphasizing the importance of seeking proper medical advice to avoid exacerbating the condition.Dr Kishore Kumar, Senior Professor of Ophthalmology at Sawai Man Singh Hospital, issued a warning against the use of steroid drops purchased from chemists without medical consultation. He stressed that such self-medication could worsen the symptoms and create an opportunity for fungus, viruses, and other bacteria to invade the eye, leading to further deterioration of the patient's condition."It is crucial for patients to seek advice from doctors for the appropriate treatment of conjunctivitis," said Dr. Kumar. To reduce the risk of contracting conjunctivitis, health experts advocate maintaining hand hygiene and eye hygiene. Dispelling a common myth, Dr Kumar clarified that direct eye contact with a conjunctivitis patient does not spread the infection. However, the infection can be transmitted through contaminated items or surfaces, making it essential to keep surroundings clean and free from flies, which can also act as carriers of the disease.
