Officials warned for laxity in curbing dengue spread
The department has appointed joint directors in all zones for intensive monitoring and supervision of prevention and control activities of seasonal diseases in nine districts -Dholpur, Bikaner, Bharatpur, Baran, Dausa, Sriganganagar, Jhalawar, Jodhpur, Udaipur, most-affected by seasonal diseases.
Aiming to prevent seasonal diseases, the number of survey teams will be increased as per requirement and regular monitoring of source reduction and anti-larvae activities will be ensured. She said that all the district collectors will also regularly review seasonal diseases.
Keeping in view the increasing number of cases of seasonal diseases in the district hospitals, Singh directed to ensure alternative arrangements and to make arrangements for the treatment of patients by creating anti-mosquito wards at the community health centre level.
In Rajasthan's Bhilwara, disease & death haunt this village of widows
The village of Shreeji Ka Kheda in Bhilwara district, known as the "village of widows," has been plagued by the deadly lung disease of silicosis due to the sandstone mines at nearby Bijolia. Around 70 widows out of 100 families in the village are a result of this disease. The villagers have made it an election issue, demanding candidates to declare their plans to address the sickness and deaths caused by silicosis. Compensation has been given to some affected families, but the cycle of sickness and death continues.
List Niemann-Pick as rare disease, parents of young patients urge govt
Parents of children suffering from Niemann-Pick disease, a rare genetic disorder, are urging the Indian government to include the ailment in the National Policy for Rare Diseases. This would enable patients to receive financial support and access expensive enzyme replacement therapy. Currently, there are 16 identified patients eligible for treatment. The disease affects one in 250,000 individuals and is caused by mutations in genes responsible for metabolizing fats in the body. The Indian government has previously supported those with rare diseases, and the drug Xenpozyme has been approved by the US FDA.
Why petrol, diesel price has dropped ahead of festive season in India
Preliminary data from state-owned firms shows that petrol and diesel sales have fallen in the first half of October. Petrol sales have dropped 9% year-on-year, while diesel consumption is down 3.2%. The decline is attributed to the larger base of sales from last year. However, diesel sales have risen 9.6% month-on-month since the end of the monsoon season. Jet fuel demand has increased by 5.7%, while cooking gas LPG sales have risen by 1.2% year-on-year.
