JAIPUR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron took out a roadshow in the old city and visited its iconic monuments like Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal on Thursday evening.
Macron was given a rousing welcome on his arrival in the afternoon at 2:08pm. He was received at the Jaipur airport by governor Kalraj Mishra, chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, external affairs minister S Jaishankar and chief secretary Sudhanshu Pant, among others. He was greeted by school children and people lined up on the JLN Marg. Waving at the people gathered there, Macron and his delegation drove straight to the historic Amer Fort. A red carpet was laid out and caparisoned elephants lined up at the hilltop fort for the French president. Macron interacted with students, who took selfies with him, at the fort.
On his visit to the Amer Fort, Macron was accompanied by Jaishankar and deputy chief minister Diya Kumari. He and his delegation browsed through artifacts on display at the temporary stalls set up near the fort entrance. The French President walked around the historic fort and took interest in its unique architecture. He was also given an overview of the history of the fort, which was the first seat of power of the Kachwaha Rajputs of Jaipur. Macron appreciated Rajasthani paintings and interacted with artists at the fort.
PM Modi, who arived in Jaipur from Bulandshar in Uttar Pradesh in the evening, welcomed Macron at the Jantar Mantar. Both the leaders took a guided tour of Jantar Mantar. The two leaders were then driven in an open-top vehicle through a short stretch in the heart of the city, beginning from Jantar Mantar and culminating at the Sanganeri Gate. They got down in front of the breezy Hawa Mahal.
From there they went to Rambagh Palace hotel, taking a round of the majestic Albert Hall. They held a high-level meeting and banquet at the Rambagh hotel. Modi left for Delhi at 10:36pm and Macron at 11pm.
