Lodge plaints over polluted water at households: PHED
Jaipur: Old pipelines, illegal connections and lack of repair are the reasons why pipelines of the Public Health and Engineering Department (PHED) are prone to leakages in the old localities of the city. Nine out of 10 times such leakages lead to supply of contaminated water at the households. “Under the Amrut 1.0 project, a few pipelines got replaced in the Walled City areas and there were hardly any cases of pipeline leakage in those localities. Until and unless the government replaces all pipelines of old areas, the issue would persist,” said a PHED engineer. To combat the issue, PHED field engineers and chemists follow a strict roaster religiously. The engineers carry out inspections to detect any leakages at regular intervals across the city. On the other hand, the chemists also follow a similar roaster to check the quality of water in different localities across the city. They prepare a list of hotspots in the city where problem of contaminated water is persistent. They carry out inspections more frequently in those localities. “The idea of such inspections is to check whether there are any leakages. The chemists carry out tests to determine the quality of water because of these leakages don’t get detected easily. In case there’s any problem with water quality, they carry out further inspections. For hotspots, inspections are carried out at least once a month,” said a PHED official.
