Jaisalmer: Langas and Manganiars of western Rajasthan need no introduction as they are known for popularizing folk music globally with their voice. But time has changed for them after participation of their younger generation in talent hunt shows. They are now making a name for themselves in playback singing.
In 2014, Swaroop Khan sang the very famous ‘Tharki Chokro’ in the film PK, now two teenager folk artistes of western Rajasthan have lent their voice for ‘Bapu Sehat Ke Liye tu to Hanikarak hai’ which features in Aamir Khan’s upcoming movie Dangal.
The song is getting numerous hits on Youtube and is on the way to becoming a chartbuster.
50-year-old Ghazi Khan Barna is a proud man whose 11-year-old son Sartaj Khan has crooned the song along with Sarohar Khan.
Folk artistes of Rajasthan believe it is a turning point for them as their young generation is testing new waters.
Swaroop Khan who had sung ‘Tharki Chokro’, which was picturised on Aamir Khan and Sanjay Dutt in PK, said, “Of course, it is a welcome change. Our elders were confined to folk singing but we have taken a step ahead. Take my words, more Langas and Mangainars would make good playback singers.”
“Over 1 crore people have seen and heard the song on Youtube while we are getting calls everyday from various people we know through our musical shows. It is a proud moment for us that our kids have given voice for Aamir Khan’s film and the song is doing wonders,” said Ghazi Khan while talking to TOI over phone.
However, for these two teenagers getting the song was not a cakewalk. “Filmmakers had taken auditions of kids of western Rajasthan out of which these two were selected. Music composer Pritam da also helped the kids,” said a relative of Sartaj Khan.
