Kota buddies head to IIT Bombay together

Kota: The most sought after computer science (CS) course in IIT Bombay has a strong Kota imprint. Data says that 45 students from Kota coaching majors have made it to the elite club of top 100 ranks. Of this, 40 students have decided to opt for CS in IIT Bombay. This includes a group of 24 students who appeared for weekly tests together for two years. For them, it’s a double bonanza as they will be studying together at IIT for four years.

For the past six years, CS in IIT Bombay, Delhi, and Kanpur has been the most sought after across all other branches in these institutions.

IIT Bombay has a total of 110 seats in all categories, including 50 in the general category. Students coming in the first 60 positions in the general category will be able to secure a seat in CS at IIT Bombay.

Another group of nine students from Kota—Lakshya Sharma, Yateesh Agrawal, Abhay Goyal, Piyush Tiberawal, Tushar Gautam, Satvik Mashkaria, Mayank Dubey, Prateek Garg and Hrithik Maheswari—who studied under the same roof didn’t think they'll be studying CS together in IIT Bombay. This group has come in the top 25 ranks. They studied in one classroom at a coaching institute for two years.

Tushar Gautam, who came 24th and hails from Kota, attributed his success to his batch mates. “The sense of competition is so high among us that we end up helping each other in succeeding. In times of highs and lows, we act as a support system for each other. In the last month before the exam, our WhatsApp group used to update each other on the most important and lesser topics,” says Gautam.

Echoing the sentiment, Yateesh Agrawal, Gautam’s batchmate who scored 12th rank, says that as they uses to come prepared to the classroom so that they could match the level of each other. “I am happy that our group of nine students will be studying together again for four years. I am hopeful that this will help is giving good performance,” says Agrawal

This not the first time that such group of students would study together at IITs. Nitesh Sharma, a technical education expert, says, “Throughout the year, these students study for national-level competitive exams together in Kota. It pushes them to perform best according to their capabilities.”

Pointing to data, Sharma says that in the last four years alone the CS branch at IIT had an average of 40% students from Kota, many of whom who studied together. Such groups also study together in IIT Delhi, Kanpur and Kharagpur, to name a few.
