JAIPUR: To address issues of

'commerce' with due diligence

,

the industry department

is looking at possibilities of restructuring itself. Minister

Rajpal Singh Shekhawat

has asked officials to study and submit a proposal for the same.

In line with the Centre, the state government wants club both industry and commerce together. "As of now, the focus is on development and regulation of industries while commerce does not get its due attention," said Shekhawat.

The department's function and operations too will be reviewed. The minister said that officials of the

department

have been tasked with the review process and would soon submit their report.

If the state government agrees to follow the Centre, then the nomenclature of the department will be changed from 'industry department' to 'industry and commerce department'.

According to officials, Rajasthan is among the few states where the department is called industry department instead of industry and commerce. If the restructuring takes place, the department will also draft, implement and monitor trade policies of the state government. The trade policy will be periodically reviewed to incorporate changes necessary to take care of emerging economic scenarios, both domestic and international.

Besides, the department will also be entrusted with responsibilities relating to multilateral and bilateral commercial relations, special economic zones, state trading, export promotion, trade facilitation and development, and regulation of certain export-oriented industries and commodities. According to officials, as per the 1948 Act, the department had onlt the mandate for industry-related work. However in 2006, policy matters of the service sector too were incorporated. To make it formal, the Union government has been demanding that the name of the department should be changed like elsewhere in the country.
