JAIPUR/UDAIPUR/KOTA/ALWAR: Many places in Bharatpur, Udaipur and Kota divisions received heavy rain on Saturday. Three people died and two others were hurt after being struck by lightning. All the 16 gates of Mahi dam in Banswara district and two gates of Kota barrage had to be opened in the afternoon due to an excess inflow of water from the catchment areas.
Nearly 50,000 cusecs of water was released from Mahi dam and 7,500 cusecs from the Kota barrage, officials said. Dug in Jhalawar received a rainfall of 160mm, the highest in the state on Saturday.
In Khairthal-Tijara district, a married couple was killed and their son received injuries after being struck by lightning. One person died and another sustained burn injuries in a similar lightning strike in Alwar district.
The deceased in Khairthal-Tijara were identified as Bhim Singh, 50, and his wife Choti Devi, 48, residents of Padmadha Khurd village under Mundawar police station. Their son, Bhuvnesh, was injured. "They were among some farmers who had taken shelter in a shed under a tree during the rain when lightning struck," said a police officer.
In Alwar, the deceased woman was identified as Mithilesh, 60, and the injured man was her nephew, Ram Niwas.
The Met office warned of heavy rainfall in Kota and Udaipur divisions on Sunday as well. Mild to moderate showers will continue in Jaipur, Ajmer and Bharatpur divisions, it said.
Many places in Bikaner and Jodhpur divisions also witnessed mild to moderate showers on Saturday. People in Jaipur had a pleasant day with mild showers, which continued sporadically throughout the day. Next to Dug in Jhalawar district was Pidawa in the same district with rainfall of 150 mm.
