HC dismisses petition seeking a ban on the movie ‘Ajmer 92’
Jaipur: Rajasthan High Court on Monday dismissed a petition seeking to ban the film ‘Ajmer 92’, which is based on the infamous Ajmer sex scandal of 1992 that involved the alleged serial gangrape and blackmailing of more than 100 schoolgirls.Anjuman Moinia Fakhria Chishtiya, an organisation in Ajmer, had filed a petition in the HC demanding a ban on the film and formation of a committee under the chairmanship of a retired HC judge to examine its content before its slated release on July 14.The petitioner claimed the movie is a deliberate attempt to defame the Dargah Sherif Ajmer and the khadims and that its trailer indicated the film is patently provocative and has blasphemous dialogues. It said the whole Chisty community has been depicted in the movie in a negative light and is being unnecessarily associated with the incident that took place in Ajmer in 1992. It said the film depicted the khadims as criminals. The movie is being marketed in a fashion that depicts Dargah Sherif Ajmer as a hub of sexual scandal and the khadims as predators of women from the majority community, it said.Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Rajdeep Rastogi argued that the writ petition is not worth consideration. He said under Section 6 of the Cinematograph Act, the Centre is empowered to review such matters and that there are other provisions to deal with such cases. He said the petitioner has also failed to prove that he was personally affected by the release of the film.
