Going to pubs against Indian culture: Rajasthan womens' commission chairperson

JAIPUR: Chairperson of the

Rajasthan State Commission

for Women

Suman Sharma

on Wednesday advised young girls to abstain themselves from practices like consumption of liquor or visiting pubs, which are against the Indian culture. She said abstinence was necessary for girls. Reacting to queries on the deteriorating law and order situation, she argued that the police or the administration cannot be blamed for everything. Sharma was interacting with the media persons at the BJP state headquarters. Talking in reference to the recent case of a 22-year-old girl being abducted and molested by a business, she said, the three girls were inebriated and had no idea what vehicle they were getting into or with whom were they going.

They were out alone, returning from a pub in that condition late in the night. Everybody - boys and girls - should be overly conscious about their behavior and security. No point blaming the police for that. The police, in fact, did a good job of not only helping the girls but also nabbing the culprit, when the girls themselves did not want to file a FIR.'' Sharma pointed out that the girls were unable to even describe the accused or his vehicle. Sharma said that consumption of liquor and going to pubs was against the Indian culture and that by breaking traditions, young girls often find themselves in trouble. Roaming around on the streets in an inebriated state is not party of culture and both boys and girls need to understand that,'' she told TOI. Late on Thursday night, the victim and her two friends, after a night out at a pub, had got into a vehicle mistaking it for a cab. The driver of the car Neeraj Gupta, pretended to have a flat tyre to get two of the girls out of the car and drove away with the victim. After a failed rape attempt, he tried to strangulate her and left her on a roadside. A police patrol team first noticed her friends and later helped her. Earlier this week, police traced the accused Gupta.
