"Two other persons were injured in the mishap, but they are out of danger now," Khandelwal said.

Police said that the incident took place shortly after 2pm when the kids were fast asleep in the house with their mother. The roof of the house with crumbling walls came crashing down on the family. The loud noice alerted neighbours who rushed to pull out survivors from the rubble amidst cries for help.

Local residents claimed that the condition of the house had deteriorated due to the incessant rains over the past few days.

The local administration and the police rushed to the spot and took the injured to the hospital where the four kids were pronounced dead.

Police said the three girls and the boy died while their mother and a girl sustained injuries. The two injured are undergoing treatment in a government hospital.

Rains had worsened the condition of the dilapidated rented house
The father was not in the home when the incident occurred. "The family lived in a rented accommodation in Maniya. The father ekes out a living by selling snacks," said an official.

Rains had lashed the area for the past several days making the condition of the already dilapidated house worse, the local police and administration said. However, they have not concluded anything yet.
