The incident happened at a panchayat called at the house of former MLA Shivram Kushwah. The panchayat failed to pacify the members of two groups, who were fighting over the past few days, reportedly over selecting a bride in the family.

The spat began between one

Ramswaroop

Kushwah and Uttam Singh Kushwah, in which Vikram Kushwah, the husband of the village

sarpanch

, had intervened.

This caused a major rift between Ramswaroop and Vikram, with the former filing a case against Uttam Singh.

Family members gather at MLA’s house for settlement

All those involved in the dispute along with other family members and supporters had gathered at MLA Shivram’s house on Thursday for a settlement. When they failed to reach a compromise, Ramswaroop’s group allegedly opened fire at others who returned fire, leaving both Ramswaroop (60) and Vikram dead along with three others, identified as Amarsingh (65), Patiram (40) and Deepu (22).

“Two groups, headed by Ramswaroop Kushwah and Uttam Singh Kushwah, had a spat over a petty issue a few days ago. Two days ago, Ramswaroop lodged a complaint of assault against Uttam Singh and his group. On Thursday morning, both groups were invited for a settlement and to withdraw the case. It appears that during the negotiations the groups became angry and started the confrontation which went on for over 30 minutes,” a senior police official said. While five died on the spot, many others were injured in the attack.

When contacted, Dholpur superintendent of police Dust Daman Singh said, “Both the groups have lodged cases against each other. All those behind the brutal murders will be arrested soon.”

Asked if all the five were killed in the firing, a senior officer said, “Prima facie it appears they were killed due to bullet and pellet injuries. We are awaiting the medical report.”
