Jaipur: The family of an elderly woman, who had been missing since September 28, have alleged that abductors have demanded a ransom of Rs 50,000 for her release. Santara Devi Gupta's family in their complaint to the Murlipura police station claimed that she had left the house on September 28 to visit a temple. They had filed a missing person’s report at the police station the next day.
On Tuesday, however, the family claimed to have received a ransom call from an unidentified phone number wherein the caller claimed that Gupta was with them and asked for the ransom.
The family claimed that they had immediately informed the Murlipura police station about the incident. ACP (Jhotwara) Pramod Kumar Swami said that police teams have fanned out to different cities to track down the missing woman. He also said that in the past, Gupta had once left for Haridwar on her own accord.
“The investigation is underway to determine who the caller was and why he demanded the ransom,” Swami said. The Jaipur police, however, said that the case remains a bit puzzling too. “There are a lot of missing links in this case. For instance, if she was abducted on September 28, why did the abductors wait till October 4 (Tuesday) to make a ransom call? These questions remain to be answered,” said an official on the condition of anonymity.
Police said based on family’s allegations, they have filed an FIR. Teams have been dispatched to different cities, even as technical experts have been roped in to examine caller who demanded the ransom. Police also said that they were also examining CCTVs of nearby areas to locate the accused.
