DRI seizes gold worth ₹3.23 crore at Jaipur Airport, Sharjah passenger arrested
Jaipur: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested a passenger at Jaipur International Airport and seized around 2.08kg smuggled gold valued at nearly Rs3.23 crore in the international market.
According to officials, the accused, a resident of Bikaner district, arrived in Jaipur from Sharjah Wednesday. On checking, officials found more than 10 tubes concealed among clothes and other personal belongings in his luggage.
“When the tubes were squeezed and examined, gold in paste form was recovered from inside them. The passenger was immediately detained and further interrogation was conducted,” said a senior officer of DRI on condition of anonymity.
He added, “The accused is a resident of Bikaner district in Rajasthan. A case under relevant provisions of the Customs Act has been registered against him.” The accused was produced before a Jaipur court Thursday, following which he was sent to jail.
Officials said the agency has launched a detailed investigation to trace the interstate and international smuggling network linked to the case. DRI is trying to ascertain for whom the accused was allegedly working and where the consignment was meant to be delivered.
