Double decker e-buses to run in Jaipur, Jodhpur & Udaipur
Jaipur: The state govt is preparing to launch electric double-decker buses in Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Udaipur by the end of this year, aiming to improve the cities' public transport. The initiative comes as part of a broader effort to enhance the travel experience for both residents and visitors. The Jaipur City Transport Services Limited (JCTSL) floated a tender on Feb 28 for the procurement of 50 state-of-the-art double-decker e-buses. Of these, 30 buses are earmarked for the Jaipur, while Jodhpur and Udaipur will each receive 10 buses.
JCTSL's managing director Naryan Singh confirmed the development to TOI, emphasising that unlike other low-floor e-buses being acquired under the Pradhan Mantri E-bus Sewa Scheme, which is supported by the Union govt, the double-decker buses will be fully funded by the state govt. "Our aim is to have these buses operational before the peak winter season of 2026. If everything goes according to plan, we hope to receive the first shipments of these double-decker buses around Diwali this year," Singh said. While the specific routes and allocations for the double-decker buses are still under consideration, JCTSL officials highlighted that the primary goal is to connect key tourist attractions, the city airport, railway stations, and major bus stands. By doing so, they aim to create a seamless travel experience and boost the accessibility of important locales in the three cities. According to an official, "The Comprehensive Mobility Plan for Jaipur proposes 25 bus corridors across the city. We need to finalise the routes along these corridors while considering existing infrastructure factors such as the conditions of old flyovers, railway over bridges (RoBs), underpasses, and height barriers along the routes." As the three cities, which are also big tourist destinations, gear up for the new development, the introduction of double-decker e-buses aims to cater to promote eco-friendly transportation.
