Delhi Police ‘torturing’ wrestlers, says Gehlot
Jaipur: Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday condemned the police action on wrestlers protesting at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi and accused police of “torturing” them. He urged Union home minister Amit Shah to take cognizance of the incident.“When Rahul Gandhi spoke about the harassment of women during Bharat Jodo Yatra (in Kashmir), Delhi Police reached (his residence) to seek information about the women. Now that the champion daughters, who made the country proud, are demanding justice for many days at Jantar Mantar after complaining of the harassment they faced, Delhi Police is torturing them instead of acting on their complaint,” said Gehlot in a tweet in Hindi. “The Union home minister should take cognizance of the incident,” he added.Several wrestlers have been protesting at Jantar Mantar since April 23, levelling allegations of sexual harassment against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh. The protesters have been demanding action against Singh for the alleged sexual harassment and intimidation of seven female wrestlers, one of them a minor. Delhi Police filed two FIRs against him. The wrestlers have been demanding Sharma’s arrest.
