Peeved with official apathy over a basic issue faced by common folk, Kamlesh Suman (29), her husband Chothmal Suman and supporters went around the lanes of municipal Ward 25 in the town and collected coins worth Rs 3,000 and deposited Rs 2,000 as security for her candidature in the local body elections.

officer, who initially refused to accept the coins, had to relent following a direction given by sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Sanjiv Kumar Sharma.

Suman, who filed her nomination as an independent on Tuesday, also deposited Rs 300 in coins to obtain the NOC from the municipality.

‘Local residents have been severely hit’

“People from Ward 25, reserved for women candidates, encouraged me to file the nomination as an independent because of the poor performance by previous councillors from both Congress and BJP,” Suman told TOI on Tuesday. “I didn’t have the money to deposit the security amount as my husband is a daily wage labourer. People approached my husband and asked him to field me in the local municipality polls. They also offered to collect the money for security,” she said.

“Local residents have been severely hit and troubled by the non-acceptance of coins in the local market and even in banks. The local administration has not taken any action on it. So, people decided to collect coins to deposit as security,” she said. A housewife, Suman had contested the previous civic polls but received only 130 votes. She is now hoping for her electoral fortune to change for better.
