JAIPUR: A 22-year-old Australian national, who had come to Jaipur with her boyfriend, was found dead in her hotel room near Ramganj Chaupar on Thursday morning.
She was bleeding from her nose and some anti-depressant medicines were found in her room. The police, however, ruled out any foul play saying that some sudden internal bleeding might have caused the death.
The body has been kept in the mortuary of SMS Hospital and a postmortem will be conducted after the arrival of her family members or the Australian embassy officials from New Delhi. The exact cause of death will be known only after postmortem, said police.
According to deputy commissioner of police, north, Ashok Naruka, the deceased, Kathleen Adam Broom, was a resident of Fitzroy in south Australia.
"She had left for India on December 12 along with her 24-year-old boyfriend Anthony James who belongs to Mill Park - a suburb in Melbourne. They first came to Delhi and then landed in Jaipur on Wednesday," said the officer adding that both knew each other for the past three years. The couple had come to India on a five month visa.
"The two checked into room number 103 of a heritage hotel 'Karnot Mahal' around 3.30 pm and then left for sightseeing. After roaming in the Walled City markets, checking emails at a cyber cafe and withdrawing money from an ATM, they returned two hours later and remained in the room for the rest of the day," SHO, Ramganj, Narendra Singh said, adding that they planned to leave for Agra on Friday.
The hotel staff had reportedly told the police that the girl was snoring loudly after falling asleep. "Her boyfriend informed the hotel reception around 3.30 am that the girl was unconscious and was bleeding from her nose," said the officer.
Sheeshpal, a hotel employee said that she was found lying unconscious on her bed.
By the time the ambulance arrived, the girl had died. "We are not sure what caused the death. It seems she chocked in sleep and could not breath leading to her death. Some internal bleeding is also suspected," said DCP Naruka.
A forensic team visited the room and found some sleeping pills and antibiotic medicines. "Kathleen had difficulty in sleeping, so she had consumed two pills before going to bed on Wednesday night. The medicines had been bought in India. We have also not come to know about any drug abuse by the girl. Further investigation is on," said the SHO.
"We have informed the Australian embassy and the statement of her boyfriend has been recorded. We have not come across any foul play so far," said the officer.
