Assembly passes Bill for ayurveda university in Ajmer
Jaipur: Rajasthan Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy University Ajmer Bill, 2026, was passed by voice vote in the state Assembly Monday, paving the way for a new state university in Ajmer.Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani said Ajmer received its second state university after 38 years. "The establishment of this university fulfilled my dream," he said.
During the debate on the Bill, several MLAs suggested renaming the university as Ayush University, including RLD MLA Subhash Garg, Independent MLA Ravindra Bhati, and Congress MLA Rafeek Khan. Garg said it was a good thing that ayurveda was being promoted, but added that Ayush universities should be opened at the divisional level.Earlier, raising questions on the Bill, state Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra said the university would not sustain as it lacked financial resources. "The Bill does not specifically talk about granting autonomy to the university. When the university does not get funds at its own level, how will it develop? When the Jodhpur Ayurveda University is doing good work, where was the need to establish a university in Ajmer?" Dotasra said.He said the powers of governors in universities had increased, and appointments were made at their discretion. He further said this university would become a commercial centre because it had been entirely left to industrialists. Deputy CM and higher education minister Prem Chand Bairwa said the university would help achieve the goal of "Swasthya Rajasthan se Samriddh Rajasthan". He said the announcement for it was made in the 2024-25 budget.
