Jaisalmer: The Desert Corps of Indian Army is restoring ponds and lakes as part of the Project Amrut Sarovar across Rajasthan.
Water bodies are being cleared of garbage, widened and deepened by Desert Corps Army Engineers with help from locals at Khetolai area of Jaisalmer. A 4,000-sqm reservoir they renovated will help the survival of thousands of gazelles and endangered birds, especially Great Indian Bustard. The pond was handed over to Khetolai village panchayat after renovation.
“In an endeavour to contribute to nation building and commemorate Aazadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and Army Day 2023, Desert Corps of Indian Army had undertaken this initiative. Mission Amrit Sarovar was launched on April 24, 2022, by the central government with an objective to harvest and conserve water for future generations,” said a defence spokesperson.
The creation of these Amrit Sarovars will also form part of the overall water harvesting schemes, keeping environmental factors in mind, and greatly help reduce water crises of villages, he added.
