Southern command chief reviews battle readiness, drone warfare capabilities in desert sector
JAISALMER: Sandeep Jain, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Command, visited forward areas of the Battle Axe Division in the desert sector to assess operational preparedness and logistics capabilities, officials said on Friday.
During the visit, Lt Gen Jain reviewed combat readiness achieved through the Indian Army’s evolving focus on multi-domain operations, with particular emphasis on the integration of advanced technologies.
The inspection included a detailed assessment of logistics infrastructure, supply chain efficiency, and the sustainment capabilities necessary for prolonged deployments in harsh desert conditions.
Senior field commanders briefed the Army Commander on the operational status of frontline units, highlighting recent initiatives aimed at enhancing surveillance, mobility, and rapid response. A key component of the review centered on the infusion of modern technology, including the incorporation of drone warfare capabilities to strengthen reconnaissance, intelligence gathering, and precision targeting.
Lt Gen Jain interacted with troops deployed in forward locations, commending their professionalism and adaptability in challenging environments. He emphasized the importance of maintaining high levels of operational readiness amid evolving security dynamics and reiterated the Army’s commitment to modernization through technology-driven solutions.
The visit also underscored the strategic significance of the desert sector, where forces must remain prepared for a wide spectrum of contingencies. Officials noted that the integration of unmanned systems and digital tools has significantly enhanced situational awareness and decision-making at both tactical and operational levels.
Highlighting the role of logistics, Lt Gen Jain stressed the need for resilient and agile support systems capable of sustaining high-tempo operations. He reviewed infrastructure developments aimed at improving connectivity, storage, and rapid deployment of resources across the sector.
The inspection forms part of ongoing efforts by the Indian Army to bolster combat effectiveness through innovation, jointness, and seamless integration of emerging technologies. The focus on multi-domain operations reflects a broader strategic shift toward future-ready forces capable of addressing complex and hybrid threats.
