AIIMS Jodhpur treats its first Chandipura case

JAIPUR: A seven-year-old girl, admitted to paediatrics department of AIIMS, Jodhpur on July 21, has successfully been treated for Chandipura virus. She was discharged from the hospital on July 30 in a healthy state. AIIMS Jodhpur officials told TOI that the girl tested positive for Chandipura Virus according to a report from NIV Pune, received on July 31.

Officials emphasised that timely referral of the case is crucial for successful treatment in such cases. The girl from Nathdwara in Rajsamand district, was brought to the hospital when her symptoms began to worsen. Within a day of experiencing seizures, she was rushed to AIIMS Jodhpur, where doctors promptly admitted her to the ICU for treatment.

Upon admission, the minor presented with fever, loose stools, and seizures for a day, indicating encephalitis. Doctors kept her in the ICU for five days (from July 21 to July 25). As her condition improved, she was shifted to a ward on July 26, where she continued receiving treatment for another five days.

Before deciding to discharge her from hospital, doctors thoroughly examined her health. At the time of discharge, doctors confirmed that her central nervous system (CNS) was functioning well, and her vital signs were normal.

This is the second case of Chandipura virus reported in the state. Previously, a 3-year-old boy from Dungarpur tested positive for Chandipura virus on Sunday. The child also recovered from the virus, according to officials.

Dr Surendra Singh Shekhawat, Jodhpur's chief medical health officer, said, "Since the girl was suffering from Chandipura virus-like symptoms, AIIMS Jodhpur sent the samples for testing to NIV."

On Thursday morning, Jodhpur's health authorities informed their counterparts in Rajsamand about the case reported at AIIMS Jodhpur, as the patient is a resident of Jharsadri village in Nathdwara. A team from the health department, including block chief medical officer, district's nodal officer for vector-borne diseases, and an epidemiologist, rushed to the village to implement preventive measures. "The team conducted a door-to-door survey of the village. All houses have been covered and no suspected case of the Chandipura virus has been found during the survey. We are alert and our teams are camping in the area," said Dr Hemant Bindal, chief medical health officer (Rajsamand).
