AIIMS Jodhpur retrieves, sends heart to SMS hospital for transplant

JAIPUR: Doctors of Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital successfully performed their sixth heart transplant after retrieving the organ from a 25-year-old woman Anita.

The heart was harvested at AIIMS Jodhpur and transported to Jaipur through a coordinated effort involving Jodhpur and Jaipur district administrations, traffic police, and airport authorities.

Flight carrying the heart departed from Jodhpur at 11.05am and arrived in Jaipur at 12.06pm, allowing medical team to complete transplantation within the critical three-hour window.

The heart was transplanted into a 32-year-old woman from Sikar at SMS hospital, which was performed by team of senior professor (cardiothoracic and vascular surgery) Dr Raj Kumar Yadav’s team.

The kidney was transplanted into a 45-year-old man from Jaipur by SMS hospital’s head of the department (urology)Dr Shivam Priyadarshi.

This was AIIMS Jodhpur's first cardiac retrieval. Organ retrieval was carried out under supervision of executive director Prof GD Puri, transplant coordination team headed by Prof AS Sandhu and medical superintendent Dr Deepak Jha.

Allocation of organs was carried out in accordance with State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation guidelines.

Anita, who had been receiving treatment at AIIMS Jodhpur following a road accident, was declared brain dead by doctors. After counselling, her family decided to donate her organs, giving four patients in need of transplants a new lease of life.

In addition to her heart, Anita's kidneys and liver were also harvested for transplantation. One kidney and liver were allocated to AIIMS Jodhpur, while the second kidney and heart were sent to SMS Hospital Jaipur.

Green corridors were established with help from Jodhpur district administration and state police to ensure swift and safe transportation of organs.

Kidney was transported to SMS Jaipur by road, while heart was first sent to Jodhpur airport from AIIMS Jodhpur, then flown to Jaipur via an Indigo flight, and finally transported to SMS Jaipur from Jaipur Airport by road.
