5,131 of 5,399 rapes in Rajasthan by person known to survivor

JAIPUR: The “Crime in India 2022” report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has attested to the fact that in most rape cases the offenders were known to the survivors.

According to the NCRB’s report, Rajasthan reported the highest number of rape cases at 5,399. In 5,131 of these cases, the offender was known to the survivor. In more than 3,000 cases, the offenders reported by women were family friends, neighbours, employers or other known persons.

As per the report, in 576 cases the offenders were family members, whereas in 1,493 cases the accused were identified to be friends, online friends, live-in partners, or separated husbands.

The NCRB report points out that only in 268 of 5,399 cases was the offender either unknown or not identified by the survivor.

When asked about the matter, a senior police official said that the figures from the NCRB align with the investigators’ findings.

“Over the past several years it has been observed that in a high number of cases, the offender eventually turns out to be an acquaintance of the survivor,” stated the official.

Crimes committed by foreigners in Goa have increased significantly, with offences committed by them being more than four times the number of offences committed against them. The rise in the number of cases involving foreigners is due to the inclusion of cases under both the Indian Penal Code and the NDPS Act. Russians and Nigerians are primarily involved in narcotics cases, while Bulgarians are often involved in ATM frauds. Recently, a Nigerian national was arrested for cheating a person by promising them a job in New Zealand. Additionally, two foreign nationals were booked for assaulting a matron in the central jail. In response to these incidents, the state government has opened a detention center at Mapusa.

At 49, Gujarat had highest number of prisoners on death row in 2022: NCRB

Gujarat's death row inmates increased from 8 to 49 in 2022, the highest for any Indian state. The rise was primarily due to the judgement of the 2008 serial blasts, with 38 convicts receiving death sentences. Gujarat now ranks second in the country for death row inmates, behind Uttar Pradesh. The report also highlights overcrowding and understaffing in state prisons, with a 40% vacancy rate for jail officers. Additionally, Gujarat has the highest number of undertrials of Pakistani origin at 99.

Rape survivor seeks nod to abort, attempts suicide in court

A pregnant 25-year-old rape survivor from Budaun district in UP consumed poison in the compound of a court in Roorkee, Uttarakhand. She was seeking permission from the court to abort the four-month-old foetus. The woman, who was employed in a private firm in Roorkee, took this drastic step right before her case was to be heard. She is now stable and under observation at AIIMS-Rishikesh.
