JAIPUR: A 45-year-old advocate ended his life by setting himself on fire on the Delhi-Ajmer Expressway passing through Dadi ki Phatak area under Kardhani police station area of Jaipur on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Devendra Sharma.


Though large number of people reacted to it and put a blanket and mud on the fire engulfed man, he died. He was running an organisation 'Bhagwa Rakshak Dal' in which he was national president.

The incident took place when Sharma left his home at 1 pm and had told his daughter that he will return in some time and have launch. "At 3 pm Devendra reached the expressway where he took out a bottle containing petrol and set himself on fire," said a senior police officer of Kardhani police station.

A large number of people were in panic and run towards the fire engulfed man to save his life. "He set himself on fire within seconds. I ran towards him and some other people came and we put a cotton mattress and some mud on him to douse the fire. He was unconscious and we intimated the police control room," said an eye-witness of the case.

A team of senior police officers reached the spot and took the man to the hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Two months ago, Sharma had posted his photo on the social media and asked that he is looking for volunteers who can work for Bhagwa Rakshak Dal and should do its publicity. During then he had also said that anyone willing to give economic help is also welcome at Bhagwa Rakshak Dal.

It may be recalled that Sharma and his wife had protested the death of a priest who had also set himself on fire at Murlipura locality in Jaipur last year in August.. Devendra his survived by his wife Rekha Sharma, two daughters Princi and Manisha and one son Shyam.

"We have found a bottle in which the deceased had brought petrol. His car is locked and was parked at some distance from where he had committed suicide. No suicide note is found from the spot. We will investigate from where he got the petrol and further find the reasons why he committed suicide," said a senior officer.
