Jaipur: Three Congress IT cell workers were among four people arrested by the Jaipur police Wednesday, a day after they were detained by Madhya Pradesh police, for allegedly creating and circulating an AI-generated fake news video that claimed that former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje had criticised the BJP’s handling of the Nari Shakti Vandan legislation. The purported fake video had used a local television channel’s logo, anchor’s voice and studio visuals to mislead social media users.

Raje had formally refuted the claims of the video.

Police identified the accused as Congress workers Bilal Khan (27), Inam Ahmad (29) and Nikhil Prajapat (22), all residents of Madhya Pradesh, along with Amrita Dhumal (37), a Mohali resident.

The case is linked to a viral “fake letter” purportedly issued in Raje’s name and addressed to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. The letter claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi used women’s reservation as a route to push delimitation, leading to the bill’s failure.

Investigators said the group used artificial intelligence tools to mimic a news channel’s presentation and pass off fabricated content as authentic.

The incident came to light on April 18 following a complaint about a viral Facebook reel that appeared to be a genuine news broadcast but was later found to be fake. A case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act.

Police commissioner Sachin Mittal said the accused manipulated existing news clips and altered the anchor’s voice using AI-based tools to create a convincing but misleading video that was widely shared.
