2 arrested for series of car thefts; accused confess to over 100 incidents
Jodhpur: Police arrested two men for stealing cash and valuables from parked vehicles, particularly luxury cars, across the Jodhpur city Tuesday.The accused, identified as Pramod Singh Chauhan and Raj Chauhan, have confessed to committing over 100 thefts in crowded areas and at public events.
Police commissioner Om Prakash said the case came to light after a complaint was filed on Feb 20 by Rekha Sharma stating that while visiting a relative at AIIMS Hospital on Feb 19, two people broke into her car that was parked outside the premises and stole Rs 2.7 lakh in cash, a gold ring, and other valuables.Following the complaint, a special police team was formed that analysed CCTV footage from routes near AIIMS. After examining nearly 350 CCTV cameras, a suspicious taxi was identified, and based on the vehicle number, police tracked and detained the two men along with the taxi on Feb 24.During interrogation, the accused admitted to targetting busy areas or wedding venues and then using screwdrivers and master keys to break car locks for stealing valuables, cash, and electronic items.Police recovered Rs 1.15 lakh in cash, jewellery, and mobile phones linked to the AIIMS incident. Additionally, a large quantity of stolen items was also seized, including 30 Android mobile phones, chargers, earbuds, ladies' handbags, travel bags, clothing, jewellery, cosmetics, and other items.The accused are under police remand, and further investigation is underway to identify other theft cases linked to them.
