JAIPUR: Torrential rainfall wreaked havoc across the state, especially in Jaipur and Bharatpur divisions, resulting in the loss of 17 lives in rain-related mishaps. Five people who went for a swim in Kanota dam in Jaipur went missing and all except one drowned in the reservoir. Four bodies were fished out until the time of going to press on Sunday night. In total, seven rain-related deaths were reported from Bharatpur, four from Jaipur, three from Jhunjhunu, two from Karauli, and one from Jodhpur.

Heavy rainfall on Sunday caused widespread damage and disruption throughout the state.

In the incident at Kanota dam in Jaipur, five of the six friends who had gone for a picnic drowned, while one was rescued. The five have been identified as Harsh Nagora, Vinay Meena, Vivek Mahore, Ajay Mahore, and Harkesh Meena. The state disaster response force (SDRF) team was involved in the rescue efforts.

"Among the five, bodies of Ajay, Vivek, Harkesh Meena and Harsh Nagora were fished out by 11.50am ," SDRF commandant Rajendra Singh Sisodia said. Efforts were on to find the missing Vinay Meena.

In Bharatpur, seven youths, including cousins Pawan, Saurav, and Gaurav Jatav, died while posing for a reel near Banganga river. The ground beneath them caved in, leading to the tragic incident. Similarly, three youths, Anuj, Bulkesh, and Anuj, drowned in a rain-fed pond at Mehrana village in Jhunjhunu district after getting stuck in the sludge.

Karauli district witnessed a flood-like situation with a record rainfall of 380mm on Sunday. A person named Zakir and his 10-year-old son Jia were killed when a portion of a neighbouring house collapsed on their home. Two other family members, Raashid and Shaukeen, are undergoing treatment for injuries.

In Jhunjhunu, three youths who had gone to take a dip in a rain-fed pond drowned in Mehrana village under Singhana police station area. "The deceased were identified as Anuj (22), Bulkesh (21) and Anuj(20). They got stuck in the sludge inside the pond and died. Their bodies were taken out and handed over to their families," said an officer with the Singhana police station.

In Jodhpur, a 17-year-old boy drowned while taking a bath in Koilana lake during a trekking trip. The deceased is yet to be identified.

More than 100 pilgrims were stranded for over six hours at Trinetra Ganesh temple in Sawai Madhopur due to heavy rainfall. A team from the forest department and SDRF rescued them.

Karauli, Niwai (Tonk), Srimahaveerji (Karauli), Shahbad (Baran), Sikrai (Dausa), Sapotara (Karauli), and Tonk recorded rainfall ranging from 95 to 137mm. Several other places in the state received rainfall varying from 10 to 80mm.
