134-yr-old Ajmer school renamed on MLA’s orders

Ajmer: The 134-year-old Govt Monia Islamia Senior Secondary School in Ajmer will now be known as the Govt Senior Secondary School, Station Road. Orders for the name change were issued by the Bikaner office of the Directorate of Secondary Education on the instructions of state Assembly Speaker and Ajmer North MLA Vasudev Devnani, it has been learnt.Officials said the orders reached the Ajmer district education office Saturday.Devnani called the name change in accordance with "Sanatan Sanskriti", which he said was a matter of pride. The BJP women's wing had submitted a memorandum to Devnani last year demanding that the school's name be changed. The Monia Islamia school has been a major educational institution in Ajmer, started in 1892 and promoted to senior secondary level in 1910.The city has seen several name changes over the past two years. The 125-year-old Foisagar Lake in the city was renamed Varuna Sagar, while RTDC's Hotel Khadim was rechristened Hotel Ajmer. The 114-year-old King Edward Memorial Rest House was likewise renamed Dayanand Vishranti Grah, while more recently, the names of Christian Ganj police station and chowki were changed to Krishna Ganj police station and chowki.
