Shamsher Singh, a resident of Dehradun, was operating a bulldozer when a sidewall of the 4.9km tunnel beneath Mukundra Tiger Reserve hills collapsed and buried him under the rubble.

The tunnel is designed to feature a roof surface for wildlife to cross. The other three workers managed to escape with injuries. Singh's remains were placed in the mortuary for an autopsy, which will be conducted after the arrival of his family members.

NHAI fines JV co 50 lakh after accident
National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) fined joint venture firm Dilip Buildcon and Altis-Holding Corporation Rs 50 lakh following the accident.

The tunnel is part of an 8.3km stretch awarded to the firm in Jan 2021. The project was expected to be completed by March 2025, said officials. An expert investigation team will visit the site to determine the cause and recommend preventive measures.
