Itanagar: The state police on Saturday arrested one Beauty Das, accused in multiple fraud cases amounting to Rs 27,20,000, in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal.
he arrest follows complaints filed by local residents namely, Pintu Taid and Dugi Vivek, alleging financial misconduct by Das, who was employed as a collector for two cooperative societies at Nirjuli near here.
According to the complainants, Das, originally from Cooch Behar and currently residing in Nirjuli, had fraudulently collected Rs 7,20,000 from Taid and Rs 20,00,000 from Vivek and 23 other individuals through her position at Demorijo Multipurpose Cooperative Society and Happy Thrift and Credit Society.
“Based on the complaints, a case was registered at Nirjuli police station under relevant sections,” SI Shakti Lamgu, one of the investigating officers, said.
Upon learning of the accused’s whereabouts in Cooch Behar, Naharlagun SP Mihin Gambo constituted a team to arrest her.
“After completing procedural formalities, the accused was brought back to Nirjuli and produced before the CJM court in Yupia,” the SP said.
The court has remanded Das to police custody for two days to facilitate further investigation into the case.
