Newborn girl treated at TRIHMS for rare condition

Itanagar: In a rare medical feat, doctors at the Naharlagun-based Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), have treated a patient suffering from Plus disease which is a condition that occurs in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Chief minister Pema Khandu has congratulated the dedicated team of doctors for achieving yet another medical milestone. The one-month-old girl was treated with intravitreal antiVEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) under topical anesthesia, according to a statement from the institute.A team led by TRIHMS department of ophthalmology assistant professor Dr Taw Anne Dipu performed the surgery and was assisted by Dr Pepu Jini and Dr Nandan from the department of pediatrics. “Heartiest congratulations to the dedicated team at TRIHMS for achieving yet another medical milestone! A 1-month-old baby girl with Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) Plus Disease was successfully treated with intravitreal anti-VEGF under topical anesthesia for the first time in Arunachal Pradesh,” Khandu wrote on X. “…this groundbreaking procedure highlights their commitment to delivering advanced healthcare to our people. Kudos to the team for their tireless efforts and service!,” Khandu wrote.
