NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party's Phurpa Tsering won the Dirang assembly consitutency in Arunachal Pradesh by a margin of 1202 votes. National People's Party Yeshi Tsewang got 6228 votes.
It is designated as constituency number 5 and situated in the West Kameng district.
Falling under the Arunachal West Lok Sabha constituency, Dirang is reserved for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates and is predominantly inhabited by the Monpa tribe, known for their unique cultural and traditional practices.
Dirang has a voting population of 15,262 people, with a literacy rate of around 67%, reflecting relatively higher educational attainment compared to other regions.
Dirang has been a competitive battleground, with Phurpa Tsering currently representing the constituency. He won the 2019 assembly elections as a BJP candidate, after previously winning the 2014 elections as an INC candidate before switching to the BJP.
