Celebrations begin to mark 62nd anniv of Battle of Walong

Itanagar: The 62nd anniversary of the Battle of Walong commenced with a month-long celebration at Walong in Anjaw district on Thursday.Dasanglu Pul, minister for women and child development and cultural affairs, presided over the event, which featured pipes and drums and cultural displays at Walong Brigade. The celebration marks the beginning of a series of events to pay tribute to the brave soldiers and citizens of Walong who sacrificed their lives in the 1962 Sino-India war, said Lt Col Mahendra Rawat, the Guwahati-based Defence PRO.During the event, Pul flagged off two battlefield treks undertaken by a joint team of Indian army and NCC cadets, retracing the route taken by the courageous soldiers during the conflict. The treks serve as a reminder of the fierce resistance put up by those valiant soldiers in challenging weather and terrain conditions, and also aim to promote battlefield tourism in the beautiful and unspoiled Lohit Valley, he added.Additionally, adventure treks to the high mountainous lakes of Jachep Tso and Kundao Tso, situated among snow-covered peaks, were also flagged off. These treks will be undertaken by a combined team of Indian Army, NCC cadets, and citizens from Anjaw and Lohit districts. The Indian army aims to promote adventure tourism in Lohit Valley and train local youth as tourism entrepreneurs through these initiatives, he said.The Army also dedicated Sadbhavna projects to the local community, which were received by Pul. As part of the commemorative events, a cycle expedition from Namsai to Namti, a motorcycle expedition from Mipi to Meshai, white water rafting from Walong to Wakro, and a half marathon from Kibithu to Walong have been planned, Lt Col Rawat disclosed.

The events include adventure activities, medical camps, and the inauguration of the renovated Walong War Memorial. The tribute culminates on 14 November with cultural performances and ceremonies, highlighting courage and sacrifice.

Pilgrim struck by pony on Kedarnath trek route falls into gorge, dies

A 45-year-old woman from Nepal, Jirwa Koirin, died after falling into a gorge on the Kedarnath-Gaurikund route in Uttarakhand. She was struck by a mule and lost her balance. Despite rescue efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities noted the crowded trek route due to increased pilgrim traffic post-monsoon.
