INDORE: Six professors of Government New Law College in Indore were on Thursday debarred from teaching duties to accommodate a college-level probe under pressure of ABVP leaders who alleged that the teachers “propagate religious extremism and indiscipline”.

“The Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has lodged a complaint with the college that they have received complaints of religious extremism in the college and indiscipline perpetrated by professors; upon which an independent committee will conduct a probe,” says an office order issued by college principal Dr Inamur Rahman. “Thus, the professors are debarred from teaching work for five days so that the college-level probe is not affected in any manner,” it says, and names the teachers — Prof Ameek Khokhar, Dr Mirza Mojij Baig, Dr Firoz Ahmed Meer, Prof Suhail Ahmed Wani, Prof Milind Kumar Gautam and Dr Purnima Bise. The action came just hours after ABVP activists held a demonstration at the college and submitted a memorandum accusing certain professors of “promoting religious fanatism, love jihad and running campaigns against National Education Policy (NEP)”. The ABVP leaders claimed that the professors have created separate messaging groups of students which are used to "spread hate messages".

Two of the professors facing action after the ABVP protest do not feature on the memorandum submitted by ABVP. Principal Rahman said, “They were facing charges of indiscipline, verbally communicated to me by ABVP leaders.”

Dr Bise, who is among those facing the probe, told TOI that she was unaware of the action. “There was some ruckus in the college after 4pm for several hours. But I never knew that I was embroiled in the controversy,” she said. Dr Baig said he heard about the probe through online messages. “I haven't received any letter/information officially from the institute. I will be in a position to respond to it tomorrow after I receive anything from the institute,” he said.
