UJJAIN: In dramatic gunfights on Saturday, police busted the entire Gurjar gang that had struck terror in

Ujjain

in recent times. Gang leader

Raunak Gurjar

and his brother Roshan were injured by police bullets and are in hospital.

Raunak carried a reward of Rs 40,000 for his capture and was wanted for 42 heinous crimes, including extortion and attempted murder. His gang had unleashed terror in the temple town in recent days, extorting and attacking businessmen. Two days ago, the gang shot at a trader for refusing to buckle to their extortion demands, and robbed and shot at another businessman. Then, Raunak allegedly shot and injured his cousin, Montu Gurjar, over a dispute in Chimanganj Mandi area.

Police decided to end the menace. They already had the gang under surveillance. Now, their mobile phones were tracked and the informer network activated.

On Saturday, around 4am, police received information that Raunak was moving in a hatchback on Panchkroshi Yatra Marg. And that most of the gang was holed up in a house in Tirupathi Nagar. A coordinated operation quickly went into operation.

SP Sachin Atulkar, ASP Neeraj Pandey and ASP Hansraj Singh sped ahead with a team and set up a roadblock. They flagged down Raunak's car, but the gangsters accelerated towards the roadblock, rammed the police jeeps, filmy style, and tried to speed away.

Police had spotted Raunak and an accomplice, Suraj Meena, in the car and gave chase. The goons fired on police, forcing the

to retaliate and Raunak was hit in the legs.

In a simultaneous operation, a team from Mahakal police raided the house in Tirupathi Nagar. As the cops closed in on the building, Gurjar gang members Anmol Gurjar and Ashish Sharma fired at them.

Police team barged into the house, under the cover of retaliatory fire, and caught Anmol and Ashish. While the operations were on, Chimanganj Mandi police received information that Raunak's brother Roshan Gurjar was hiding in a house in Dewas town. Cops raided the house, but could not find him. They got a tip that he was fleeing on a motorcycle towards Ujjain.
