Car hits couple selling goods on road; woman killed, husband critical

Indore: A woman was killed and her husband injured critically when a speeding car hit them while they were selling goods by the roadside near IPS College in Rajendra Nagar on Friday morning.
According to Rajendra Nagar TI Neeraj Birthare, the accident took place at around 10.45 am when a speeding car lost control and hit the couple. "The driver instead of braking stepped on the accelerator, dragging the victims for around 300 metres. He managed to escape initially but was later apprehended by the police," he said.
The victims, Rahul Chauhan (35) and his wife Sapna (32), natives of Maharashtra, were selling electronic goods by the roadside when the accident occurred. Their three-year-old daughter was also with them and she suffered minor injuries, the TI said.
The driver, identified as Adarsh, was taken into custody. During questioning, he reportedly confessed that he was listening to loud music and lost control of the steering wheel. He claimed that he did not notice the couple on the roadside until his vehicle hit them, sources said.
An enraged mob at the spot vandalised the car and overturned it. The police seized the vehicle and found intoxicating substances and liquor bottles inside.
The police have ruled out the possibility of driver being under influence of alcohol based on medical examination. The presence of intoxicating substances in the car is being investigated. Rajendra Nagar police have registered a case.
