BARWANI: Three men died and six others were injured when an unknown vehicle rammed into a pickup vehicle on Agra-Mumbai National Highway in Barwani district of Madhya Pradesh, in the early hours of Friday.

The pick-up vehicle, carrying passengers returning to Palsud from a fair in Patalpani area of Mhow tehsil of Indore, ran out of fuel in between Thikri and Segwal area. Some of the passengers got down to push it to the roadside, when a heavy vehicle hit them at around 1am, DSP Kundan Singh Mandloi told TOI.

The collision caused the pick-up vehicle to overturn and trap the passengers, he said adding the larger vehicle fled the spot, leaving behind the victims, most of whom fell unconscious.

As some gained consciousness, they freed themselves and rolled the vehicle back on its wheels.

One Sunil (35) of Upla died on the spot, Mandloi said, adding, "Vijay (32) of Danod and Rajesh (25) of Rampura died during treatment at district hospital."

Six others are undergoing treatment and are said to be out of danger.

Police have registered a case and were trying to trace the larger vehicle.
