Indore: Police have arrested a driver who had hit two youths with his SUV on the morning of Rangpanchami in Chhatripura area and fled the spot.
Police scanned CCTV footage from more than 100 cameras for two days to track the vehicle and identify the accused. The accused, identified as Shah Rukh Lohar, a resident of Green Park Colony, was arrested. The SUV involved in the crash was also seized.
During questioning, Lohar told police that he worked as a driver for a resident of Green Palace Colony. On Sunday, he drove two people to Bombay Bazaar. While returning, he allegedly dozed off briefly and lost control of the vehicle. Panicked after the crash, he sped away from the spot with the SUV
A friend of the victims, Irfan, attempted to chase the vehicle after the accident, following it through Gangwal, Futi Kothi and Mhow Naka up to Chandan Nagar Square before losing track when the driver turned towards Dhar Road.
He could not note the vehicle number at the time.
Additional DCP Dishesh Agarwal said the accident occurred near Silawatpura Ganesh temple in the early hours, when Tanveer Khan, 19, and his friend Faizan Mansuri, 22, were standing by the roadside. A fast-moving SUV hit both of them, leaving them critically injured. They were rushed to a private hospital, where Tanveer succumbed to his injuries during treatment, while Faizan survived with serious injuries.
