MHOW: Sixth battalion of Kumaon regiment (formerly 6/19 Hyderabad regiment) which has the recognition for wining and overpowering Chinese troops in the 1962 Indo- China war is presently stationed at Mhow cantonment. The battalion is celebrating diamond jubilee of Walong day (China War). The battle held at Walong sector on eastern front is among very few battles of 1962 war where Indian troops were able to register victory.
The series of events to celebrate the diamond jubilee started on Saturday and they will conclude on Monday. A galaxy of the serving and retired officers and jawans of the battalion reached Mhow and the battalion has organized programmes to honour its veterans, of which many have fought 1962 and 1971 wars. The program involves a commemorative walk to Walong Dwar of Infantry School followed by a Barakhana (grand feast) where the present troops will interact with those veterans. A special 'Sound and Light Show' has also been organized which is showcasing the proud history of the battalion. Wreath laying ceremony will be held on Monday morning for honouring the martyrs. Also, a trophy honouring the actions of its troops in 1962 and 1971 wars will also be unveiled on Monday.
Remembering the Walong battle, a veteran officer proudly said, "My battalion gained prominence for many reasons. It was one of the few sectors, which had no road linking it to the rest of the country and was entirely air maintained. Various actions in the battle were fought at heights ranging from 3500 ft to 14,500 ft. in spite of the fact that the Kumaon troops that were posted at lower heights were not even acclimatized before the action but the enemy suffered very heavy causalities in their hands. The Mishmi Hills of Walong sector still echo with stories of bravery of Kumaon troops".
Col Ravi Batra (retired) told TOI, "The battle has been given very high importance in the Indian military history. Infantry School in Mhow is the Alma Mater of all Infantry officers, JCOs and Jawans and the main gate of this institution has been named as Walong Dwar. In our courses, the battle of Walong sector is taught because 6 Kumaon troops fought this decisive battle with almost negligible resources and taught Chinese, a lesson".
