Side effect: Indore's MGM Medical College stops use of black fungus injections

INDORE: Two days after patients with mucormycosis developed side effects after administration of Lyophilized Amphotericin-B injections, MGM authorities have decided to discontinue its usage.
The decision was taken as a precautionary measure after 80 of the 220 admitted patients’ complaints of cold and shivering. Those patients developed severe cold symptoms after being administered the injection manufactured at a plant in Himachal Pradesh on Sunday.
“After the side effects of Amphotericin-B injections manufactured at a pharmaceutical plant in Himachal Pradesh, we have stopped administering it to patients as a precaution.We have received 3,000 vials of Amphotericin-B injection on Saturday prepared at this plant,” said MGMMC dean Dr Sanjay Dixit.
As many as 220 black fungus patients admitted in MYH- an associated hospital of MGMMC, were given one dose each of Lyophilized Amphotericin-B injection on Saturday and about 80 of these patients developed severe cold, MGM dean Dr Sanjay Dixit said.
Dr Dixit however said amphotericin injections causing side effects like fever, shivering and stiffness in 30 to 70 per cent of patients was well known.
