Shortage of consumables, medicine hits maternal services at MTH Hospital

Indore: Shortage of essentials, including medicines, has crippled health services at Maharaja Tukojirao Holkar (MTH) Hospital aimed at treating poor pregnant women. The authorities are unable to supply the required medicines and essentials despite hue and cry from treating doctors and patients. The situation is such that the hospital has become 90% deficit of essentials, including medicines.On December 21, the hospital authorities demanded cumulatively 26,030 units of essentials, including gloves, sterile gloves, syringe, sanitary pad, and ECG roll from MY hospital store. They were supplied only 1165 units of the items. Similar was the case with essential medicines required at the hospital, show records.A senior consultant told TOI, “MTH Hospital sends demand to MYH store for medicines and essentials. But, it is getting only 10% to 30% of required medicines and essentials that too based on availability there.”“The situation has remained the same since the hospital started functioning. It further aggravated in the last three months with supply being cut down drastically”, added the consultant.The 400-bed hospital constructed at approximate cost of Rs 35 crore was handed over to MGM in April 2020 amidst Covid-19 pandemic. Initially, it was used as Covid-19 hospital.The hospital started catering to maternal health needs of the patients from 15 districts of Indore and Ujjain divisions from April last year. The hospital treats cumulatively over 7000 patients in a month with 5000 being in out-patient department and 1400 deliveries, show records.MGM dean Dr Sanjay Dixit told TOI, “Stores have shortage of consumables and drugs. The direction for coordination was issued to the hospital manager to sort out the issue as the stocks are not available in MYH store. We have written for consumables worth about Rs 50 lakh and medicines for our hospitals,” added Dr Dixit.

The junior doctors association has alleged that the hospital authorities have failed to provide sufficient gloves for diagnosis and operations, forcing doctors to reuse them against guidelines. This violation of infection control protocol puts patients at risk. The hospital manager has been directed to coordinate with other hospitals to resolve the issue.

Vijayakant admitted in hospital again

Vijayakanth, the actor turned politician, has been admitted to a private hospital due to ill health. He has been battling some illness for a few years and has been in and out of the hospital. The latest admission comes after he underwent treatment at a private hospital in Chennai earlier this month and was discharged a couple of weeks ago. A medical bulletin from the hospital states that he is in good health and will return home after a routine health check-up by December 28. His political party, DMDK, has issued a statement confirming that he is completely fine.
