Premature greying of hair among GenY rises 15% in 3yrs
Indore: Grey hair among GenY is increasing at an alarming rate. Cases of premature greying of hair have increased amongst youngsters by 15% in past three years, said Dr Anil Dashore, secretary of Association of Hair Restoration Surgeons of India on Thursday.
According to doctor, most patients suffering from the disorder are men due to lack of iron and calcium. “In past three years, cases of premature greying of hair have increased amongst youngsters especially among students of Class 10 and 12. In this stage students usually are under pressure of studies and do not take proper diet, said Dr Dashore.
He added cases have increased in girls as well. In girls we have noticed that it is because of deficiency of vitamins.
In diagnosis, dermatologist takes blood samples of patient and checks for deficiency of platelets and prescribes medicines accordingly. In last few years, it has been noticed that due to change in lifestyle and food habits, the disorder has increased.
Along with diet, it is hormones that lead to greying of hair. However, in order to get rid of grey hair, youngsters use dyes that have chemicals. “The dyes damage the hair and led to hair fall,” said Dr Dashore.
Instead of hair dyes, people should change their diet and start eating green vegetables, iron rich food and milk to fulfill the deficiency. “There is a myth amongst people that their hairs get grey due to hard water. However, hard water just increases dryness in hair instead of making it grey,” Dr Dashore told to TOI.
Another dermatologist and cosmetologist Dr Anil Garg, chairperson of Association of Hair Restoration Surgeons of India said cases of baldness have also increased in city. Doctors have started treating baldness through hair transplantation. “Now, hairs from other body parts are used and are transplanted on head to treat baldness. Such surgeries have increased amongst teenagers the most,” said Dr Garg, adding that, “Earlier hairs only from backside of the head were used for transplantation.”
