Not many takers for seats at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical college

INDORE: For the first time, state's Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College (MGM) is not finding enough takers for MBBS course. More than 40 per cent of the total seats lying vacant in MBBS course of the six government medical colleges are from MGM.
Of the total 87 vacant seats in government medical colleges, 36 seats are of MGM. The fact came to fore during the Supreme Court hearing on Monday where vacant seat status was tabled.This dismal scenario of admission at MGM has left the senior professors worried, which they believe is beyond comprehension. "It is for the first time that so many seats are lying vacant after first counselling.
MGM is one of the most sought after colleges in state and its seats get filled fast. We are unable to understand the reason behind it," said a senior professor.
The college has a total of 120 seats to be filled through centralized counselling conducted by the state government. The medical education department's director Dr G S Patel said, "A series of issues have marred the admission process. But, we are quite positive that the seats will be filled in the counselling scheduled to start after Supreme Court's extension order."
A large number of medical seats are also lying vacant in private colleges of Indore region.
More than 730 MBBS seats are vacant in the private medical colleges of the state, which includes 363 seats for the unreserved category.
Similarly, in BDS course, out of total 944 vacant seats, 443 seats are vacant for the unreserved category candidates.
The seats will be made available in the second round of counselling, which will start from Tuesday.
"We will simultaneously begin with third round of counselling to fill seats in government colleges and second round for filling seats in private medical and dental colleges," said DME Dr Patel adding that the Supreme Court has made it clear that admissions already made before Sept 30 shall not be disturbed.
However, seats that remained vacant after September 30 are to be filled after permitting non-domicile students in unreserved category for the counselling in both MBBS and BDS courses.
